Sustainable Event Planning Guide

Hotels

Many organisers of international events tie-up with hotels in order to offer participants competitive rates during their stay here. In order to offer sustainable hotels, event organisers should enquire with hotels about specific efforts being made to reduce environmental impacts from property-wide initiatives to guest rooms and food & beverage.

These days, an increasing number of hotels, from the more budget-friendly to the more luxurious, are designing their buildings sustainably, adopting sustainable operations, procurement and management. By considering a hotel’s green initiatives, event organisers can select eco-hotels to partner with as the choice for overnight accommodations for international guests.

Use these guidelines in selecting a sustainable Hotel:

  • Green certification e.g. BCA Greenmark, EarthCheck

  • Staff training in environmental management

  • Renewable energy sources like solar energy

  • Waste Reduction and Management program

  • Energy Efficient lighting and appliances

  • Water Efficient fittings and processes –Reuse of kitchen, bath and laundry water for garden and landscaping

  • Sustainable Procurement e.g. Sustainable linen, biodegradable cleaning agents and laundry detergent, carpeting with recycled fibers

  • Non-smoking environment

  • Bulk biodegradable, cruelty-free soap and amenities instead of individual packages to reduce waste

  • Bottled water alternatives e.g. water dispensers, complimentary refillable bottles

  • Guest room and hotel lobby recycling bins

  • Linen re-use program

  • Accessible by public transportation

  • Ethically and locally sourced vegetarian friendly food & beverage options e.g. Fair Trade tea/coffee

  • Reusable cloth napkins, glass cups, silver wear, ceramic dishes, etc. with all food and beverage services.

  • Food waste reduction & management initiatives

  • Set targets for carbon reductions

  • Newspaper recycling program

  • Donates leftover food to a local nonprofit organisation

  • Donates reusable items e.g. beds, chairs, ceramic wear
