Sustainable Event Planning Guide

Venues

Venues

Venues play an important role in any sustainable event. The infrastructure and processes needed for energy and water efficiencies are made available by the venue. Waste (food or otherwise) will also be dealt with by the venue, for the most part. Therefore, it is very important to select a venue that has a strong sustainability approach to running events. A combination of sustainable building features, operations and environment management has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of any event.

Use these guidelines in selecting a sustainable Venue:

  • Select venues that have a clear commitment to environment sustainability e.g. A well-defined environmental policy

  • Green certifications e.g. ISO20121, ISO14001, BCA Greenmark, APEX/ASTM

  • Green venue packages e.g. Marina Bay Sands Eco360, Fairmount Hotel Eco-Meet

  • Staff training in environmental management

  • Sustainable building features – Solar passive design, rainwater harvesting, renewable energy, native and/or edible landscaping

  • Waste Reduction and Management program

  • Energy Efficient lighting and appliances

  • Water Efficient fittings and processes

  • Targets for carbon reductions

  • Easily accessible via public transportation

  • Sustainable procurement e.g. Use of sustainable products, products from social enterprise or socially disadvantaged groups

  • Sustainable practices e.g. Reuse of stationery and pens

  • Ethically and locally sourced vegetarian friendly food & beverage options e.g. Fair Trade tea/coffee

  • Community involvement e.g. Supports a community organisation, local charity or NGO
